Explorer + Creative
A natural scientist and explorer, I have always studied the world around me with an insatiable curiosity. I am highly driven to get to the roots of things, make connections, gain insight to share, and truly see things as they are in all their nuance.
I am a foraging curator, noticing the subtle color variations, textures, lines, and movements around me. I gently collect what I find--botanicals, fodder for ink, ideas, aesthetics, and play around until I find the spark of the next idea. I see my creativity as an act of reciprocity with the beauty all around me.
Mixed media means it's all on the table, and I never get bored. I keep it fresh living for the adventure of daily life. I do not question the journey here; I live in gratitude for it daily.
When I’m not painting, you’ll find me tending to all of the creatures in my life with my partner, including three sons, an Aussidoodle named Louie, houseplants, and gardens.
Craftsman + Visionary
With more than a decade of fine woodworking experience, Matthew is a true craftsman and artisan. He is the engineer behind many studio projects and creates beautiful frames for the artworks. he runs his own business full-time and makes our family a priority. He is an ultimate supporter and visionary and has helped with founding the studio in every way.
Artist Statement
Ever the curious explorer, my abstract mixed media works are guided by my connection with the natural world. I celebrate the beauty, and ecology of roots and home—human and non-human. My creative process is fueled by wisdom traditions and scientific knowledge, maintaining a deep respect and attunement to the language of our first Mother, Earth.
Every painting begins with the spark of an idea and movement to action. Colors are inspired by, or directly derived from, foraged and gifted material. My painting process resembles the Earth’s own creation: early layers are fluid and blended, followed by shaping and ‘excavation’ of the composition. Layers of color, texture, and collage are applied until the work is ready for the final flourishes of detailed marks.
All of my works, including acrylic, wild ink, and eco prints, are a mark of place, time, and material. They are a map of the terrain and the heart that holds it dear.
Artist Mission
Art is how I process and move through the world. I forage, curate, and explore the terrain of land and heart.
I hope to convey what I value: authenticity, community, growth mindset, sensitivity, and adventure.
I also hope to challenge, test, and evolve on this journey of discovery and expansion.
