Baltimore Oriole Mini Original

$200.00

Named after the colorful coat of arms of Lord Baltimore in the 17th century, you have to look high in the trees for this bird. These orioles are common in the Midwest into the east, and have been associated with the sun given the males’ flaming orange color with black head and back. Females are more yellow-orange in color, but molt repeatedly and can become almost as bright orange as the males. Listen for a rich, fluting song up high in the trees.

This is another fruit-loving songbird, but interestingly, prefers ripe, dark-colored fruit and oranges. Cut oranges in half and hang them from a tree to attract them to your yard. Habitat includes mixed woodland, shaded areas, and riverside groves. They forage for insects, fruit, and nectar from flowers. During their winter in Central America, they mingle around shade-grown cacao trees, gardens, and some woodlands.

If you spot a male, you’re likely to spot the architectural feat that is their pouch nest nearby—built by the expert weaver herself, the female. The male may help bring material. The nest hangs from a few branches, tightly woven from grasses, strips of bark, yarn, string, moss, and hair. The only one I’ve witnessed also appeared to have some strips of paper, of all things! It’s truly remarkable.

Both parents feed their nestlings protein-rich insects, while the fruit they eat in autumn and winter is easily converted to fat that sustains them during their migration. While they have been known to damage some fruit crops, they do eat many pest species.
