“Asclepias incarnata, Rose Milkweed, is also commonly called Red Milkweed, Marsh Milkweed, or Swamp Milkweed. That lovely vanilla fragrance you detect coming from large rosy pink flowers possibly hosting several Monarch or Swallowtail butterflies is Rose Milkweed. Like all members of the Asclepias genus, this milkweed is often used by monarch butterflies as a host plant.
Pollination Facts:
* Unique pollen mechanism: Instead of dust-like pollen, milkweed uses pollinia (waxy, paired sacs). When a visitor lands, its leg slips into a slit (stigmatic chamber), catches the pollinia, and pulls it out.
* The ‘saddlebags’: The insect carries these pollinia, looking like small saddlebags, to the next flower, where the process is reversed, and the pollinia is inserted into a new slit.
* The mechanism requires strong, heavy pollinators (like large bees or wasps) to pull their legs out. Smaller or weaker insects can get stuck in the slits and die.
* These fragrant, pink-to-mauve flowers produce large amounts of nectar, attracting a wide variety of bees, wasps, and butterflies.
* Key visitors: Besides the famous monarch butterfly (which uses it as a host plant), swamp milkweed is highly popular with honeybees, bumblebees, and various flies and moths.
* Growing conditions: Thriving in moist, sunny areas, they bloom in summer and are crucial for the late-summer monarch population.
* Fruit production: Successful pollination results in long, slim seed pods (follicles) containing seeds with silky hairs for wind dispersal.
