What’s with the name, you wonder? It comes from their primary song, which sounds like “dick-dick-ceessa-ceessa.” These are another native grassland bird that sticks to the heart of the Midwest, though most migrate to Central and even upper South America for the winter. They also may not nest in the same areas year to year and wander a bit even outside of their typical range. Habitats include native grasslands, pastures, and agricultural fields.
They resemble sparrows with more Bunting-like beaks. Males are brown and tan with a yellow chest/eyebrow and black bib. Females are similarly colored with no black bib. Males may have more than one mate in a nesting season, but are very attentive partners while foraging and visiting possible nest sites. Males sing to defend territories and may spar on the ground with challengers.
Diet is mainly insects and seeds. Nests are built by the female on the ground in dense vegetation. She tends to the young until fledged about 10 days later. Dickcissels are not the subjects of extensive folklore, but their adaptability to varied habitats symbolizes resilience and an ability to thrive in uncertain environmental dynamics.
