Eastern Bluebirds have historically been associated with love and happiness, with beautiful royal blue plumage and red-brown chests that look like a ‘vest.’ They breed in the Northeastern quarter of the U.S., and otherwise inhabit the Southern mid to Eastern U.S. into Central American over winter. You’ll find them perched on a telephone pole or fence post waiting for the next insect or worm of some kind to swoop down and catch. Males will attract a female by bringing nest material to a natural tree cavity or nest box, and then she builds the nest. He protects the territory by fighting off anyone he deems a threat–nest cavities are a hot commodity for other birds, too. They may re-use a nest for subsequent broods.
