Wild Ink Set: The Writers’ Set

The defining characteristic of ink and its history is that it is a tool for communication. A bit more care and a bit different prep go into these inks, with much more gum arabic to allow for ink flow. These inks are meant to be used with dip pens, whether glass or otherwise, and have not been tested with any other pens.

Black walnut brown: Matthew, my husband, grew a bunch of black walnut trees when he was in college as part of an entrepreneurial project. Today they produce tons of walnuts, matured in their 20 years, and though these first inks are not made with walnuts from those trees, soon they will!

Chicory tan-brown: A couple years ago, I was reading about chicory having antioxidants and being used as a coffee alternative in the Civil War. This chicory is ground in Louisiana, and I had purchased it to drink it. I never fully transitioned to chicory coffee, but this is one of my all-time favorite inks to play with! It’s a rich leather-tan like color.

Vine black: This was the hardest to create. I tried a few charred things and couldn’t quite get the material I needed to mix well with the gum arabic and water. I settled for pre-purchased vine black made from burnt grapevine, and I still hope to create my own from scratch. This ink is still created with a mortar and pestle and rigorously tested!

Remember to shake each ink bottle before opening, and put a bit in an ink well to get started writing, or painting! Cheers!
